A Strategic Advancement for the European Patent Office
The European Patent Office (EPO) recently announced the integration of a text recognition tool developed by Mistral AI, a European company, to optimize the processing of its sensitive documents. This initiative aims to ensure that critical information remains under the governance of European regulations.
The partnership, unveiled in Munich, relies on the use of sophisticated optical character recognition (OCR) technology. This solution is directly integrated into the EPO's systems, allowing documents to be converted into machine-readable data. The main objective is to improve the accuracy and speed of prior art searches, which are essential for verifying the novelty of proposed inventions.
A Technology Tailored to Patent Challenges
The OCR technology developed by Mistral AI is specifically designed to handle the complexity of patent files, which include multilingual texts, formulas, chemical structures, tables, and digitized old publications. This solution offers superior extraction accuracy compared to generic tools available on the market.
Each year, the EPO processes approximately 200,000 patent applications and grants 120,000 patents, while managing a database of over 160 million technical records. Improved structuring of this data translates into more reliable prior art searches, facilitating the work of examiners.
A Strategic Partner Choice
By choosing Mistral AI, the EPO ensures that the processing of sensitive data complies with the legal and ethical standards of the European Union. Mistral AI is not new to collaborating with sensitive institutions, having already signed an agreement with the Ministry of Armed Forces in January 2026.
António Campinos, President of the EPO, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating that it demonstrates how European collaborations can responsibly utilize AI to enhance public services and support innovation.
After three months of successful testing on real patent data, a larger-scale deployment is planned. The EPO also intends to explore new sovereign AI capabilities for other processes. This type of partnership could serve as a model for other European administrations, although the question of the necessary resources and expertise remains.
