Full Analysis

Ordering a hotel or a table at a restaurant from your smartphone is convenient, but it can be dangerous when you're behind the wheel. Alibaba offers an innovative solution with its artificial intelligence, allowing users to place orders directly from their cars.

Alibaba's AI in Cars

At the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, Alibaba showcased its AI model, Qwen, which will be integrated into vehicles from several Chinese automakers. The brands involved include BYD, Geely, Li Auto, Changan, Dongfeng, BAIC, Great Wall Motor, SAIC Volkswagen, and SAIC IM Motors.

Voice Commands While Driving

Alibaba's system enables drivers to perform various voice commands, such as reserving a table at a restaurant, booking a hotel room, purchasing tickets for events, or tracking deliveries. This system combines local processing and cloud computing, utilizing automotive chips from Nvidia. It has been designed to remain functional even with limited network connectivity.

BYD is one of the manufacturers participating in this project. This is not the first time Qwen has been integrated into a vehicle, as it was previously used in the Hongqi HS6, a plug-in hybrid SUV, earlier this year.

Software as a Differentiating Factor

These developments come amid a slowdown in electric vehicle sales in China. Manufacturers are looking to stand out with innovative software features rather than just mechanical specifications or range.

Audi and Cadillac Also Embrace AI

Other players in the automotive industry have also presented their AI innovations at the show. Audi, which has modified its logo in China to a simple text, announced that its second electric model, the E7X SUV, will be available for pre-order starting May 8. This model will incorporate AI technologies from Doubao, the assistant from ByteDance, as well as those from iFlyTek.

Cadillac also unveiled a new model equipped with a voice assistant connected to Doubao. However, it was not specified whether these features would be available in versions exported outside of China.
