During its IO 2026 developer conference, Google announced an extension of its AI Inbox feature for Gmail, introducing a new advancement in the integration of artificial intelligence. The new feature, called Gmail Live, leverages IA Gemini to provide a conversational search experience. Users can now interact with their inbox by asking questions in natural language, rather than being limited to keywords in the search bar.
This innovation aims to simplify the search for information often buried in emails. Whether it's to get details about a flight, the time of a dentist appointment, the access code for an Airbnb rental, or information about a school event, Gmail Live promises to make this data more accessible. Previously, users had to rely on typing keywords, a method that sometimes proved ineffective when search terms appeared in multiple messages.
Devanshi Bhandari, product manager for Gmail, explained during a briefing prior to the Google I/O conference that Gmail Live is capable of answering naturally phrased questions, handling follow-up inquiries, and even changing topics mid-conversation. The demonstration showcased how the tool can process queries about school projects, educational outings, as well as information on hotels and flights for a trip to Detroit. Similar to an autonomous chatbot like Gemini or ChatGPT, users can interact with Gmail Live using their voice.
During the demonstration, Gmail Live also showcased its ability to understand nuances between similar terms, such as "school trip" and "travel," and to switch from one topic to another effortlessly. The AI can extract precise details from emails, such as a hotel room number, and identify people even if they are not explicitly named in the messages.
In addition to this feature, Google announced that similar capabilities will be integrated into its task list, Google Keep. However, it is important to note that Gmail Live does not replace traditional Gmail search. It is an additional option for those who want a more intuitive interaction with their inbox.
Google has learned from its previous experiences, particularly with Google Photos, where the integration of AI faced criticism. After initially imposing AI-powered search, Google had to backtrack and make this feature optional following user complaints.
In addition to Gmail Live, Gmail is being enriched with new features, such as drafts ready to be sent, instant access to files, and the ability to manage tasks by marking individual tasks as completed. The AI Inbox experience, launched earlier this year, will also be extended to Google AI Pro and Plus subscribers, allowing a preview of tasks and items to catch up on in a single interface.
The voice-powered Gmail Live feature will be rolled out later this summer, but initially reserved for Google AI Ultra subscribers. This innovation could transform the way users interact with their emails, making the search for information more intuitive and efficient.
