The Impact of AI on Employment in France
Artificial intelligence is poised to significantly transform the employment landscape in France. According to a joint study by Coface and the Observatory of Threatened Jobs, AI could lead to the elimination of nearly 5 million jobs by 2030.
5 Million Jobs at Risk
The study highlights that 16.3% of jobs, both in the public and private sectors, are threatened by the increasing automation driven by agentic AI. This form of artificial intelligence, capable of making decisions autonomously, could disrupt many sectors. Currently, France has approximately 2.5 million unemployed individuals, underscoring the potential scale of this transformation. Economist Aurélien Duthoit emphasized the macroeconomic impact this evolution could have.
White-Collar Workers on the Front Line
White-collar jobs are particularly exposed to this threat. Countries like the United Kingdom (with 19.5% of jobs at risk) and the Netherlands (19%) are in a similar, if not more critical, situation. Axelle Arquié, an economist, specified that the most at-risk professions include those requiring cognitive skills, work on digital platforms, or formalized expertise. Even traditionally stable and prestigious professions, such as lawyer or engineer, could be affected by these technological advancements.
