AI Drives European Funding
Funding for companies in Europe reached $17.6 billion in the first quarter of 2026, according to data from Crunchbase. This increase of nearly 30% compared to the previous year marks the second consecutive quarter of growth. Artificial intelligence has been the main driver of this rise, capturing more than 50% of the total funding in Europe for the first time this quarter. However, despite this increase in funding, the volume of transactions has declined.
This trend aligns with a similar global context, particularly in North America, and surpasses the amounts from the previous five quarters, indicating a resurgence in corporate funding in Europe.
Performance of Startups in the UK, France, and Germany
British and French startups performed particularly well, raising $7.4 billion and $2.9 billion, respectively. In Germany, startups raised $1.9 billion, a stable amount compared to the previous year. France has established itself as a leader in the field of cutting-edge AI labs. A notable example is the Parisian company Advanced Machine Intelligence, founded by former Meta AI chief Yann LeCun, which raised $1 billion, marking the largest seed funding round ever recorded in Europe. This round is the second of over $1 billion for a European AI lab, following the $2 billion round for Mistral AI last year.
Increase in Late-Stage Funding
Late-stage funding for startups based in Europe has nearly doubled compared to the previous year, reaching $9.2 billion across 83 transactions. This increase represents a 91% rise from the previous year. The sectors involved include AI hardware, fintech, agentic AI, productivity software, sensors, defense, e-commerce, and energy.
Trends in Early-Stage and Seed Funding
In contrast, early-stage funding has decreased by about 20%, totaling $5.3 billion across more than 240 funding rounds. Series A rounds, particularly in semiconductors, energy, and healthcare, dominated this category.
Seed funding reached $3.1 billion in the first quarter across more than 790 transactions, up 50% from the previous year, largely thanks to the round from Advanced Machine Intelligence. Investments in AI infrastructure, cutting-edge labs, autonomous systems, and applications were the most significant, led by European and American investors.
Overall, Europe is following global trends as capital concentrates in the largest deals in sectors experiencing rapid growth due to AI.
