Full Analysis

Artificial intelligence (AI) is profoundly redefining entry-level jobs, offering new graduates greater responsibilities right from their entry into the job market. Career experts emphasize the importance of using AI intelligently, without becoming overly dependent on it, to succeed early in one's professional career. Graduates must combine AI skills, good judgment, relationship building, and professional etiquette.

AI may not receive a warm welcome at university graduation ceremonies this spring, but it is transforming the workplace that the Class of 2026 is about to enter. Until recently, employers typically assigned junior recruits basic, often tedious tasks to teach them the ropes. However, with AI tools like ChatGPT capable of handling much of this work at lightning speed, some companies are entrusting entry-level employees with more significant responsibilities from the outset.

"AI is changing the entry-level experience for an entire generation of office workers," said Peter Cappelli, professor of management and director of the Wharton School's Center for Human Resources at the University of Pennsylvania, in a previous interview with Business Insider.

Avoid Shadow AI

Chris Lyon, head of engineering at Twilio, a communication infrastructure platform, recommends sticking to approved AI tools rather than engaging in what is known as shadow AI. This practice can lead to the leakage of sensitive company information outside corporate protections. "You need to be particularly careful," he added, emphasizing the importance of closely following employer security protocols when using AI.

Avoid Over-Reliance on AI

It may be tempting to use AI to assist you in nearly every aspect of your work. But going too far can weaken your ability to solve problems and think creatively, warned Jeff LeBlanc, a management professor at Bentley University. "If every email, every idea, every decision is filtered through AI, people may never fully develop their own instincts," he said. "Early career growth is supposed to include uncertainty, mistakes, and discoveries. It is in this discomfort that confidence can be built."

Be Skeptical of AI

AI is like "an unreliable colleague" — sometimes brilliant, sometimes catastrophically wrong, said Matthew Bidwell, a management professor at Wharton. "You need to ensure that the output passes the reality test," he said. "You can't just believe everything you get from them." This is important because submitting sloppy AI-generated content to your boss could breed resentment, noted Dr. Andrea Derler, a senior researcher at Visier, a workforce intelligence company. Senior employees who started their careers doing grunt work do not want to have to clean up the careless AI-generated content of junior employees, she added.

Don't Hide Behind a Screen

With AI at your disposal, you might think it inappropriate to ask someone more senior for help in understanding a task. However, asking questions, such as why a task is important and what success looks like, is actually a wise decision as it demonstrates your critical thinking, said Hebba Youssef, head of human resources at media company Workweek and host of the HR podcast "I Hate It Here." Even if you don't need help, building relationships with more experienced colleagues is always wise, added Rebecca Port, head of human resources at Okta, an identity management company. A chatbot won't help you navigate office politics, and while your performance is important, relationships can also play a role in your promotion or bonus. "Like it or not, organizations are social organisms," she said.

Be Reliable

The workplace is not as forgiving as the classroom. If you consistently arrive late, dress inappropriately, miss deadlines, or commit other faux pas, it could harm your career, said Dr. Derler. She described reliability as a "hidden expectation" that is essential for gaining your employer's trust to remain in the company. "If you say something will be done by 5 PM tomorrow morning, have it done by 5 PM tomorrow morning," she advised. "Don't try to negotiate deadlines two minutes before the deadline."
