This study, which surveyed 2,050 IT leaders worldwide, underscores a shift from basic skills to more advanced capabilities in AI oversight.

Key Findings from the Survey

The survey results indicate that traditional IT roles are undergoing significant changes in the age of AI. The fields of IT operations, software development, and cybersecurity are experiencing both workforce reductions and increases. This "reorganization of work" is redefining professional roles, with 40% of leaders reporting reductions in IT operations due to automation, while 56% report additional hiring in these same areas.

In software development, 26% of respondents have observed job reductions, but 37% have also noted an increase in hiring. For data analysts, the situation is balanced, with 37% of leaders seeing both reductions and increases.

Evolution Rather Than Elimination

When asked about the impact of generative AI on employment, 42% of leaders indicated that this technology has led to the creation of new jobs, compared to 11% who mentioned job losses. Additionally, 35% observed a dynamic where jobs were created and lost simultaneously, while 13% noticed no impact of AI on employment.

Overall, 77% of leaders reported job creation, whether accompanied by losses or not. According to Baris Gultekin, Vice President of AI at Snowflake, these results show that AI does not eliminate roles but evolves them.

Growing Demand for Advanced Skills

The survey data reveals that the narrative of AI replacing tech jobs is more nuanced than it appears. Historically, major technological advancements tend to transform the nature of work rather than reduce the total number of jobs. With generative and agentic AI, this pattern is repeating.

Certain roles focused on specific tasks are being automated, but there is an increasing demand for more advanced skills in areas such as AI operations, cybersecurity, data engineering, and governance. Organizations with more extensive experience with AI are seeing job growth, suggesting a reallocation of talent towards more strategic and technical roles.

Concerns Related to Agentic AI

The Snowflake survey also addressed business and technical concerns associated with the development and deployment of agentic AI. Among the primary concerns are interoperability issues (42%), incompatibility with legacy systems (39%), the provision of real-time data processing for agent decision-making (42%), job displacement (29%), maintaining human oversight to prevent undesirable actions by agents (29%), and concerns regarding data storage and usage (29%).
