Anthropic recently announced the launch of new features for its chatbot Claude, specifically designed to assist law firms. These innovations are part of Claude for Legal, a dedicated offering for the legal field launched earlier this year. Among the new features are legal plugins and MCP connectors aimed at covering various areas of law, including commercial law, privacy, corporate law, labor law, product law, and AI governance.

This announcement comes amid intense competition in the legal AI sector. In March, Harvey, a startup specializing in legal process automation, raised $200 million, reaching a valuation of $11 billion. More recently, Legora successfully raised $600 million in a Series D funding round and launched a notable advertising campaign featuring actor Jude Law. Like Harvey, Legora offers automated solutions to simplify complex legal processes that traditionally required entire teams.

Anthropic's new tools are designed to help law firms automate specific clerical functions, such as document research and review, legal resource management, deposition preparation, and document drafting. The plugins represent a set of automated functions and tools tailored to various legal fields.

Additionally, Anthropic offers model context protocol connectors (MCP), which allow for the integration of specific data sources and third-party systems with AI models. These connectors embed Claude into widely used applications by law firms, such as DocuSign and Box, as well as legal research platforms like Thomson Reuters (which operates Westlaw).

These new features are available to all paying customers of Claude and complement other legal industry plugins the company launched in February. According to an Anthropic spokesperson, the legal sector is feeling increasing pressure to adopt AI, and those who adapt quickly are gaining a competitive edge. Claude is delving deeper into knowledge work, with the legal sector emerging as one of its most significant and fastest-growing industries.

However, the integration of AI into the legal field is not without risks. Incidents have been reported where lawyers used AI to generate legal documents containing errors. A lawyer in California was even sanctioned for using ChatGPT to draft an appeal with fictitious citations. Furthermore, the use of AI by some federal judges to draft decisions has drawn the attention of Congress. Additionally, AI-generated lawsuits are clogging the judicial system, overwhelming courts with piles of poorly argued legal documents. These issues highlight the challenges posed by AI in the legal field, particularly regarding the accuracy and reliability of generated documents.
