University Revolution in China: AI Redefines Education
Artificial intelligence is shaking up the global educational landscape, and China is a striking example. The country has embarked on a radical overhaul of its university programs to meet the growing demands of the digital age.
Massive Curriculum Reforms
According to the China South Morning Post, between 2021 and 2025, Chinese universities have eliminated 12,200 degree programs that they deemed obsolete. In response to this massive reduction, 10,200 new courses have emerged, representing a 30% adjustment of the country's university programs. These changes aim to align education with technological advancements, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence.
Most Affected Sectors
The reforms have primarily impacted sectors that offer few job opportunities, as 16% of young Chinese are currently unemployed. The fields of humanities, arts, languages, and management have been particularly affected. To compensate for these cuts, programs more aligned with emerging technologies have been developed. For example, nine universities have introduced programs focused on " embodied intelligence," or intelligence embedded in a physical body.
Reflection on the Future of Education
This transformation raises questions about the adaptability of educational systems around the world. In France, for instance, should we consider similar reforms to address the challenges of youth unemployment and technological evolution?
