Google I/O: AI at the Heart of Announcements

During the annual Google I/O conference, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, highlighted major updates centered around artificial intelligence. These improvements primarily concern the integration of AI into Google's classic search bar. Liz Reid, head of research at Google, described this update as the most significant since the launch of search over 25 years ago.

The initiative aims to integrate AI Mode, which has been around for over a year, as the default search experience. This would prevent users from having to choose between different AI tools, consolidating them into a single seamless experience.

Spark: A New Always-On AI Assistant

Among the new features, Google is introducing Spark, an AI agent designed to be always active. This new assistant is integrated into Gemini as well as other Google applications and products. Josh Woodward, vice president of Google Gemini, described Spark as a way to "launch things over your shoulder" for the AI to take over and complete.

However, access to this feature is initially limited to subscribers of the Google Ultra plan. This premium plan is generally offered at $249 per month, but Google has introduced a new pricing tier at $100 per month to encourage users to try Spark.

Generation Z and AI: A Declining Enthusiasm

Google's aggressive AI strategy may not appeal to Generation Z. This age group, particularly recent graduates, is showing signs of increasing reluctance towards technology. Figures like Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, and Scott Borchetta, CEO of Big Machine Records, were booed when they addressed the topic of AI.

A recent survey revealed that enthusiasm for AI has dropped by 14% among young people aged 14 to 29 over the past year. Furthermore, nearly half of Generation Z members (44%) expressed doubts or resistance towards their company's AI strategy.

AI Adoption: A Challenge for Google

Despite these reservations, Sundar Pichai emphasized that AI Overviews in Google Search boast over 2.5 billion active users per month, while AI Mode has over a billion users. Overall, the monthly usage of Google's AI products has increased sevenfold since last year.

For Google and other tech giants, AI adoption remains a priority, given the colossal investments already made. However, the growing skepticism from Generation Z could complicate this task, making the promotion of AI more challenging than anticipated.
