OpenAI Faces Florida Justice: ChatGPT at the Center of Controversy
The state of Florida has initiated legal proceedings against OpenAI, becoming the first U.S. state to accuse the company and its CEO, Sam Altman, of deceptive business practices and negligence regarding safety. At the heart of this case is ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence tool that Florida claims is built on unscrupulous foundations.
The 83-page complaint alleges that ChatGPT has "aided and encouraged" perpetrators of mass shootings, thereby exacerbating the distress of vulnerable individuals. A particularly cited case is the shooting that occurred in April 2025 at Florida State University, which resulted in the deaths of two people and injuries to six others. In response, the state is seeking civil penalties and injunctions to limit data collection, especially concerning minors, and to compel OpenAI to strengthen its security measures.
On June 1, Attorney General James Uthmeier officially filed the complaint, denouncing the abusive exploitation of user data and serious negligence on the part of OpenAI. According to him, the company has prioritized its financial ambitions, estimated at a valuation of $1 trillion, over the safety of its users.
Serious Consequences of the Accusations
The Florida complaint lists several charges against OpenAI, including deceptive business practices, product liability failures, negligence, false statements, and public disorder. The state argues that ChatGPT was used in the preparation of the shooting at Florida State University, although OpenAI has denied any responsibility, calling the event a "tragedy" with no direct link to its product.
The Attorney General also highlighted the increased vulnerability of young people to ChatGPT, which simulates a human and benevolent presence. He criticizes OpenAI for failing to implement sufficient safeguards to protect minors, particularly regarding parental controls and data collection regulation.
As a result, Florida is demanding civil penalties and court injunctions to force OpenAI to stop downplaying or concealing the risks associated with ChatGPT while limiting the data collection from minors.
