The French government and AMD officially announced an ambitious partnership on Thursday aimed at accelerating the development of artificial intelligence in France. This collaboration was unveiled during a ceremony at the Ministry of Economy and Finance in Paris, where three French ministers and a representative from AMD signed an agreement that promises to transform the AI landscape in the Hexagon.
A Strategic Partnership
The partnership between France and AMD revolves around three main pillars: computing infrastructure, research, and training. Philippe Baptiste, Sébastien Martin, and Anne Le Hénanff, respectively the ministers of Higher Education and Research, Industry, and Delegate for Digital Affairs, signed this agreement alongside Keith Strier, Senior Vice President of AMD for Global AI Markets. The goal is to provide access to AMD's most advanced computing tools to the French AI community, including researchers, developers, and startups. The partnership is set to last several years, highlighting the long-term commitment of both parties.
The Alice Recoque Supercomputer
At the heart of this partnership is the Alice Recoque supercomputer, which will be the first in France to achieve exascale power, capable of performing a billion billion operations per second. This project is being developed in collaboration with GENCI, the Jules Verne consortium, and CEA. The supercomputer will enable the simulation of complex phenomena in climate, military, and scientific materials. AMD will provide this supercomputer in partnership with Bull, which was recently acquired by the French state.
Training and Infrastructure
AMD is committed to supplying its chips and software, as well as educational programs such as the AMD University Program, the AMD AI Developer Program, and the AMD AI Academy for broad AI skill development. These initiatives aim to enhance the AI skills of French researchers and engineers. Philippe Baptiste emphasized that this partnership will offer the French scientific community unprecedented access to cutting-edge infrastructure. He also mentioned that France has globally recognized research laboratories, engineers trained in the best schools, and nearly unique digital and energy infrastructures in Europe.
An Excellence Center for AI
In addition to technology, AMD will contribute to the creation of a center of excellence to maximize the use of the supercomputer. This center will play a key role in the AI Factory France, a project aimed at stimulating innovation in AI. The center of excellence will also be responsible for feeding the future AI Factory France. Minister Sébastien Martin highlighted the importance of this public-private cooperation, which is expected to generate significant economic and social benefits. AMD is also committed to working with the state on the local economic and social impacts generated by the research conducted within this framework.
Towards Public-Private Cooperation
Anne Le Hénanff reminded that solid infrastructures are essential for the development of AI. Keith Strier from AMD praised France's efforts to establish an ambitious national AI program, making this partnership an ideal opportunity to strengthen France's position in the field of artificial intelligence.
