Microsoft took advantage of the Build 2026 conference to announce a major advancement in the field of artificial intelligence. The company introduced MAI, a new family of seven internally developed AI models, covering a wide range of functionalities from image generation to voice management. This initiative marks a strategic turning point for Microsoft, which aims to position itself as a key player in the generative AI sector, especially following the end of its exclusive partnership with OpenAI.
A Diverse Range of Models
The MAI range includes several specialized models:
-
MAI-Thinking-1: This model focuses on reasoning and coding, with 35 billion active parameters and a context window of 128K. It has been developed to be less energy-intensive than its competitors, thanks to training on cleaned and commercially licensed enterprise data.
-
MAI-Image-2.5 and its Flash variant: These models are dedicated to image generation and modification, with planned integration into PowerPoint and ongoing deployment on OneDrive.
-
MAI-Transcribe-1.5: Optimized for multilingual transcription, it enhances accuracy across 43 languages and plans to offer a streaming service.
-
MAI-Voice-2 and its Flash version: These models enrich voice synthesis with voice options in 15 additional languages.
-
MAI-Code-1: Designed for the GitHub ecosystem, it is already integrated into Copilot and VS Code.
MAI-Thinking-1, a Flagship Model
MAI-Thinking-1 stands out for its performance, having been preferred over Anthropic's Sonnet 4.6 model in independent tests conducted by Surge. It also matches the coding capabilities of the Opus 4.6 model on the SWE Bench Pro benchmark. Currently, it is available in private preview on the Foundry platform.
Expanded Distribution
Microsoft has decided not to limit access to its AI technologies to its own Azure cloud. The MAI family will also be available on third-party platforms such as Baseten, Open Router, and Fireworks AI, in order to ensure broad availability and reach a wider audience.
