Google Makes It Easier to Integrate Memories into Gemini
Google has recently introduced an update for its Gemini app, allowing users to easily import memories from competing platforms such as ChatGPT and Claude. This new feature enables the transfer of reminders, preferences, and complete conversation histories, thereby providing continuity in the user experience.
The import process is relatively straightforward. Users need to copy a suggested prompt from the original AI app, generate a summary, and then paste it into Gemini. This action allows Gemini to save the information within its own system. Additionally, users have the option to download conversation histories as a ZIP file, with a size limit of up to 5 GB, to continue previous conversations directly in Gemini.
Google has also renamed the "Past Chats" feature to "Memory," with a gradual rollout of this update.
A Strategy Inspired by Anthropic
Anthropic, a competing company, was the first to adopt this memory import approach. This decision came after OpenAI faced criticism for a military agreement that Anthropic had declined on ethical grounds. By offering this feature, Anthropic aimed to attract users looking to migrate to a more ethical platform.
Both Google and Anthropic use a similar method to extract user data: a simple prompt asking the existing AI app to provide all stored information about the user. This strategy facilitates data transfer and enhances the user experience on Gemini.
