Siri and Google Gemini: A Strategic Partnership
Apple is preparing a major overhaul of its voice assistant Siri with the arrival of iOS 27, integrating Google Gemini's artificial intelligence. According to a report by Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, this update could be announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference, which begins on June 8, and launched in September alongside new Apple products.
Siri, launched in 2011, is a central element of Apple devices, enabling a variety of tasks such as making calls, sending messages, or managing a smart home. This year, Siri will be at the heart of Apple's innovations, with a potential entry into the foldable phone market and a redesign of AI for camera devices. Apple aims to transform Siri into a competitive AI chatbot against rivals such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, Anthropic's Claude, and xAI's Grok.
In addition to these developments, Siri could become a standalone application as it transitions to a generative AI chatbot assistant. Apple is also considering entering the foldable phone market, which could mark a new era for the company.
Privacy at the Heart of Concerns
With iOS 27, Siri will heavily rely on Google Gemini, a leader in the AI chatbot field. Apple, which has always emphasized data protection, avoids using raw customer data to train its AI. Currently, Apple Intelligence generates AI responses using customer data, either on-device or via the company's Private Cloud Compute, designed to keep data private.
In January, Apple and Google announced a multi-year collaboration, integrating Gemini's models while maintaining Apple's privacy standards. However, it remains unclear where Siri's customer data will be analyzed and stored with iOS 27. Although Apple will continue to use Private Cloud Compute in the new Siri, Gurman indicated that the company has not specified whether it will rely on the same chips, data centers, and security as today's Siri and Apple Intelligence features.
Mark Gurman wrote that Apple "had no other option" but to use Google's AI for Siri. While Apple has maintained that it wants to preserve user protections while offering AI, it seems the general public is beginning to realize that privacy requires compromises.
New Features and Functionality
Users will be able to choose to automatically delete Siri conversations after 30 days, one year, or keep them indefinitely, a feature already present in Apple's messaging app. Additionally, Apple plans to enhance genmoji, these AI-generated emojis, with suggestions based on photos and frequently used phrases by customers.
Genmoji, introduced in December 2024 in iOS 18.2, allow users to create custom emojis from descriptions or photos. With iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, Apple will introduce "Suggested Genmoji" that will be created from users' common photos and phrases.
Mark Gurman also mentioned that the new Siri could be available in beta, giving users the option to switch between the current version and the new improved version.
Apple's AI Strategy
Tech analyst Paolo Pescatore commented on Apple's strategy, highlighting that the company is not looking to win the AI race through noise or novelty, but rather to make AI useful, private, seamless, and deeply integrated into its ecosystem. He added that Apple's slow and thoughtful approach to AI, rather than spending huge sums, has been a wise strategy.
There is clear pressure on Apple to succeed with Siri's AI chatbot, but adopting a measured approach could prove to be the best long-term strategy.
