The Fear of Missing Out in the Face of AI's Pace
Cat Wu, product lead at Claude Code and Cowork at Anthropic, recently discussed a concerning phenomenon in the field of artificial intelligence: FOMO (fear of missing out) that grips users as new features rapidly multiply. During an episode of the "Lenny's" podcast aired on Thursday, Wu explained that this fear of missing the latest advancements drives users to frequently check platforms like Twitter to stay updated.
Wu emphasized that this situation is exacerbated by the frantic pace of product launches in the AI ecosystem. AI labs, major tech companies, and startups are competing to release increasingly innovative tools, leading to information overload and product overlaps. She acknowledged that this rapid cadence of releases can be stressful for users, who feel like they are on an ever-accelerating treadmill.
Criticism and Challenges for Claude Code
This month, Claude Code has faced criticism from its users regarding the inferior quality of its outputs. Over the past few weeks, users have complained that Claude Code's responses have significantly declined in quality. Despite Anthropic's efforts to strengthen its position in AI coding, users have expressed dissatisfaction with a perceived drop in the quality of responses provided by the tool. The company has denied any intentional degradation of the tool and identified three main issues that may contribute to a less satisfactory user experience.
Wu, who joined the AI lab in 2024, explained that companies typically launch a feature every month or quarter, allowing users to stay informed easily. However, in the race to build the best AI tools, labs and startups are releasing features at an unprecedented pace, often in overlapping areas.
An Avalanche of New Features
In recent months, Anthropic has sought to bolster its position in AI coding with a series of model launches and product updates for Claude Code. Since its launch in February 2025, Claude Code has evolved from a simple terminal-based coding assistant to a comprehensive AI-powered workspace, integrating features such as plugins, memory, and multiple agents. According to a tech blog tracking Anthropic's launches, the company shipped over 45 new features in the first three months of the year.
However, this avalanche of new offerings is not without consequences. Wu expressed her desire to see products that help reduce this information overload, allowing users to feel more supported and informed. She added that the rapid pace of the industry affects Anthropic, with features sometimes being redundant due to the need to test numerous ideas.
Intense Competition in the AI Market
In this context, Claude Code finds itself in direct competition with tools like Cursor and Codex, made by its main rival OpenAI, as well as startups such as Lovable, Bolt, and Emergent. This intense competition underscores the importance for companies to find a balance between rapid innovation and quality user experience. Wu expressed her hope that users could open these tools and feel educated or informed about what they want to know, in order to feel less overwhelmed by the speed of technological advancements.
