Bouygues Telecom Introduces AI Translation for TV Subtitles
Bouygues Telecom is positioning itself as a pioneer in France by testing automatic translation of TV subtitles using artificial intelligence. This innovative service, integrated into the b.tv decoder, allows viewers to follow live programs in five different languages.
On June 3, Bouygues Telecom announced the launch of a testing phase for an intelligent TV subtitling system. This AI-powered system is directly integrated into the b.tv decoder. It relies on live video streams that already have subtitles for the hearing impaired, automatically translating them in real-time. The results of this experiment are expected in September.
A Technology Integrated into the b.tv Decoder
The service utilizes television channels that already broadcast subtitles for the hearing impaired. The artificial intelligence, already present in the b.tv decoder to enhance image quality, is now employed for real-time translation. This process occurs locally within the decoder, allowing each user to choose their preferred display language.
The languages available during this testing phase include:
- English
- Arabic
- Spanish
- Mandarin
- Portuguese
However, the availability of these languages depends on the presence of source subtitles in the broadcast stream. Bouygues Telecom plans to expand this list based on the results of the testing phase.
Increased Accessibility for All
The service is not limited to the hearing impaired. Bouygues Telecom also targets non-French speakers, foreign language learners, and expatriates living in France. The goal is to enable everyone to follow programs under optimal conditions.
Activating the service is designed to be intuitive. From the channel being watched, users can access the settings of the b.tv decoder via the “Language and Subtitles” icon to select their desired translation. The options generated by the AI are clearly identified.
This service will be showcased at the VivaTech conference in about two weeks, where it will be available for demonstration.
