Mythos Preview: A Cybersecurity Tool Without CISA
Anthropic, a company specializing in cybersecurity, has recently launched its new model, Mythos Preview, designed to detect and fix vulnerabilities in computer systems. However, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), a key federal entity, has not been included in the list of beneficiaries of this innovative tool. This model is presented by Anthropic as a major asset for strengthening digital defenses.
Selective Adoption by Federal Agencies
According to a report published by Axios, several federal agencies, such as the Department of Commerce and the National Security Agency (NSA), have already begun using Mythos Preview. The administration of Donald Trump reportedly took steps to expand access to this tool. Anthropic mentioned in a blog post that it is in ongoing discussions with U.S. government officials regarding the cybersecurity capabilities of Mythos Preview, both offensive and defensive. An anonymous company official clarified to Axios that CISA had been informed of the existence of this tool. However, Anthropic declined to comment further, and CISA did not immediately respond to requests for comments.
Political Context and Impact on CISA
The Axios report highlights a concerning trend: CISA's operations do not seem to be a priority for the current administration. This situation could jeopardize the digital security of the United States. As an integral part of the Department of Homeland Security, CISA is supposed to coordinate cybersecurity information and support local and state officials in managing elections and public services. However, the Trump administration and some Republicans in Congress criticized the agency, especially after it claimed that the 2020 election was the most secure in American history, a statement that led to the firing of its director by Trump.
Budget Cuts and Resource Reallocation
Since Trump's return to power, several decisions have further restricted CISA's operational capabilities. Like other federal agencies, CISA has faced personnel losses due to cost-cutting efforts by the Department of Government Efficiency. Additionally, some of its employees have been redirected to immigration-related priorities. The acting director of CISA informed Congress that the agency's resources for detecting cyberattacks are limited, a situation exacerbated by the current shutdown of the DHS, as the administration seeks to further cut the agency's budget by several hundred million dollars.
Consequences of CISA's Exclusion
CISA's lack of access to Mythos Preview raises questions about the strategy for protecting America's critical infrastructure. Anthropic claims that Mythos Preview has already identified security flaws in all major operating systems and web browsers. Restricted access to this tool is said to provide a "competitive advantage" to key institutions in cybersecurity defense, according to Newton Cheng, head of Anthropic's red team. However, for now, CISA is not among the beneficiaries of this strategic advantage.
