John Roberts and the Impact of AI on the Legal Profession
During a talk at Rice University, Chief Justice John Roberts expressed his concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence on the legal sector, particularly for young lawyers starting their careers. He shared a personal anecdote where his son demonstrated the capabilities of AI, leaving him "completely bewildered."
Roberts emphasized that AI will exert pressure not only on law students but also on judges. He pointed out that the profession will need to evolve and that future lawyers will need to demonstrate great agility to adapt to technological changes. He hopes that despite these challenges, competent individuals will continue to choose law as a career.
Transformation of the Legal Profession
The Chief Justice clarified that "the work of young lawyers and associates will change." He expressed hope that talented individuals will continue to enter the legal field while acknowledging the necessity for them to quickly adapt to the new realities imposed by AI.
These comments come in a context where several AI startups are competing in the business law market, a sector valued at $1 trillion. Among these companies, Harvey stands out with a valuation already exceeding $8 billion.
Challenges for Young Lawyers in the Face of AI
Roberts expressed specific concerns regarding the "types of pressures" that young lawyers may encounter as AI takes over tasks traditionally performed by junior associates. He stated, "I think it's going to be really tough for young lawyers."
He illustrated his point by explaining that in the future, an associate might ask a young lawyer to analyze a legal statute. If AI can provide an answer in three minutes, the young lawyer might take three days to complete the same task.
Roberts also mentioned the implications for judges, asserting that the pressures related to AI go far beyond mere job replacement. He maintained his prediction that "human judges will be around for a while."
The Impact on Judges' Work
The Chief Justice discussed the pressure a judge might feel when faced with results provided by AI, stating, "I want to be fair, with a 68% chance of being right."
Roberts, who describes himself as a "dinosaur when it comes to technology," indicated that he will rely on his clerks to stay informed about advancements in AI. He also mentioned his two children, who are in their twenties and enjoy experimenting with this technology.
His son, Jack, showed how he used AI to create a song about the family dog visiting the Supreme Court. "Write a song about a little dog named Jojo who goes to court where his owner is the Chief Justice," he asked the AI.
Roberts was amazed by this demonstration, wondering how AI was able to generate such varied content.
