AI in the Service of Simplifying Organizational Charts
Companies are modernizing their internal structures with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). Consulting firms, in particular, are turning to AI to optimize their operations, notably by reducing hierarchical levels. This technology enables leaders to manage larger teams while improving the speed and quality of decision-making. Giants like IBM and Factory are following this trend by integrating AI to redefine their management structures.
A Necessary Restructuring for Consulting Firms
For consulting firms, the time for transformation has come. The integration of AI is becoming crucial to reduce costs and improve efficiency. By adopting AI agents in their processes, consultants aim to simplify management levels, allowing leaders to oversee larger teams. Alexis Krivkovich, a senior partner at McKinsey & Company, expressed her optimism about the potential impact of AI on simplifying organizational structures during an episode of "The McKinsey Podcast."
The Impact of Additional Organizational Layers
Over the past decade, many companies have added at least one organizational layer between the CEO and frontline staff, and in some cases, it has been closer to two or three layers. Krivkovich points out that this increased complexity leads to high costs and slows down decision-making, as each decision must pass through several levels of validation.
AI as a Catalyst for Rapid Decisions
AI offers a solution to accelerate decisions and improve connections within companies. The evolution of organizations will vary by sector. In life sciences, for example, "agent teams" could drive innovation. Additionally, AI can automate tasks in departments such as human resources, finance, and legal, allowing resources to be reallocated to other areas of the business, according to Krivkovich.
Towards a "Great Flattening" of Companies
This phenomenon of simplifying hierarchies through AI is sometimes referred to as the "Great Flattening." Eno Reyes, CTO and co-founder of Factory, stated to Business Insider that company organizational charts will likely begin to condense to become more horizontal.
The Example of Factory and IBM
Factory, an AI-native software development platform, creates and deploys autonomous coding agents for consulting firms like EY and companies such as Nvidia and Adobe. At IBM, which also has a consulting division, Senior Vice President Mohamed Ali anticipates the emergence of new management structures as the company integrates "digital workers" alongside its 150,000 human consultants. Ali told Business Insider: "I don’t think human managers will manage these things in the same way we manage people. There will be systems to manage these things. There will be systems to establish the guardrails."
