Jensen Huang Opposes Alarmist Discourse on AI
Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, recently expressed his disagreement with the pessimistic predictions of certain tech leaders regarding the impact of artificial intelligence on employment. According to him, these leaders, due to their status, develop a "God complex" that leads them to believe they hold the absolute truth about the future.
Huang warns against these statements, believing they could have detrimental consequences for society. He cites the example of radiology to illustrate his point. A decade ago, Geoffrey Hinton predicted that AI would render radiologists obsolete. While AI has indeed integrated many aspects of radiology, the profession still suffers from a shortage of practitioners. Hinton himself has acknowledged that he overestimated the impact of AI on image analysis.
Redefining the Role of Professions in the Face of AI
For Huang, it is crucial to distinguish the specific tasks of a job from its fundamental purpose. For example, writing code is a task for a software engineer, but the essence of this profession lies in problem-solving and innovation. Similarly, the work of radiologists is not limited to reading scans but includes diagnosing diseases.
Huang asserts that AI has contributed to the creation of over 500,000 jobs in recent years. He also emphasizes that Nvidia is expanding and hiring an increasing number of engineers, demonstrating that AI can be a driver of growth rather than a threat to employment.
