OpenAI, known for its advancements in artificial intelligence, is looking to revolutionize the smartphone market by introducing a device centered around AI agents rather than traditional applications. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, OpenAI is partnering with chip giants MediaTek and Qualcomm, as well as manufacturing partner Luxshare, to bring this ambitious project to fruition.
Production of this innovative smartphone could begin as early as the first half of 2027, a year ahead of the initial deadline of 2028. This acceleration is linked to OpenAI's upcoming IPO and the intensifying competition in the AI hardware sector.
An AI-Centric Smartphone
OpenAI's concept revolves around AI agent software that would handle user tasks, replacing the traditional app grid with a task flow. This approach could prove more efficient if OpenAI controls both the hardware and the operating system. The company already possesses the brand, user data, and models necessary to support this strategy, with potential revenue coming from subscriptions and hardware sales.
Strategic Partnerships and Production
MediaTek, as the exclusive chip supplier, plays a key role in this project. Ming-Chi Kuo's forecasts estimate that combined shipments for 2027 and 2028 could reach around 30 million devices.
Challenges and Opportunities
Choosing the smartphone as a form factor shows that OpenAI recognizes that more experimental AI hardware is not yet ready for the mainstream. Smartphones remain dominant, and Google, with Android, already has a head start with its own developing AI features.
However, challenges remain, particularly regarding the security and reliability of the systems. Even if the software works perfectly, there is still a lack of a killer use case beyond practical tasks like restaurant reservations. This project echoes the "Facebook Phone," which was merely a reskin of an operating system on existing hardware. Yet, OpenAI may succeed where others have failed.
