In his recent work, The Anxious Generation, Jonathan Haidt highlights a shared concern among many K–12 educators: the impact of smartphones on adolescent mental health. According to him, this technology has led to a generational crisis. With the emergence of artificial intelligence, educators fear a similar scenario if this technology is not properly integrated into the educational system.
To avoid repeating the mistakes of the past, a strategy is emerging: to strengthen AI literacy among K–12 students and teachers. In this context, higher education is positioned as a key player. Universities and other higher education institutions have the responsibility to provide resources, training, and in-depth research to guide the integration of AI into education.
The goal is twofold: on one hand, to enable educators to better understand and leverage AI in their teaching practices, and on the other hand, to prepare students to navigate a world where AI plays an increasingly prominent role. By investing in training and research, higher education can thus contribute to a more informed and beneficial use of AI from the earliest school years.
