A New Billing Approach for Claude Subscriptions

Starting June 15, Anthropic, the company behind Claude, will introduce a new billing structure for its paid subscriptions. This reform aims to separate programmatic usage, which includes SDKs, command lines, and third-party tools, by assigning it a distinct monthly credit pool. This decision marks a significant shift from the previous model where programmatic usage and regular chat shared the same limits.

A Pricing Model Under Pressure

Until now, Anthropic's fixed pricing system was under strain due to the heavy use of third-party tool integrations, which are particularly resource-intensive. As a result, users of these third-party applications will see their costs increase, as programmatic usage will now be billed at full API rates. This new pricing structure could make Claude more expensive for those who heavily utilize these tools.

Dedicated Monthly Credits for Programmatic Usage

Starting in mid-June, paid subscribers of Claude will receive a specific monthly budget for the use of SDKs, command lines, and third-party tools. While this may seem advantageous, these credits will be billed at full API rates, which could surprise some users accustomed to subsidized pricing.

The Separation of Credits: A Necessity for Anthropic

Anthropic has decided to change its billing method for Claude subscriptions. Beginning June 15, users will receive a dedicated monthly credit for programmatic usage, separate from their current interactive usage limits. This credit will cover the Claude Agent SDK, the command line tool claude -p, Claude Code's GitHub Actions, and all third-party applications built on the Agent SDK.

The Impact of Third-Party Tools on the Pricing Model

Until now, the use of SDKs and claude -p shared the same rate limits as Claude Code and chat. However, with the emergence of third-party tools like Conductor and OpenClaw, heavy usage quickly depleted monthly budgets, disrupting Anthropic's fixed pricing model. In response to the growing interest in OpenClaw, Anthropic had already implemented a restriction specifically targeting this tool and others like it. The new policy now extends to all future third-party usage.

More Expensive Programmatic Usage

Anthropic developer Lydia Hallie illustrated this separation of credits in a tweet: one pool for interactive usage with the same limits as before and another for programmatic usage with the new credit, billed at API rates. While Hallie claims that "you are not paying more," this only reflects part of the reality. Until now, programmatic usage was included in heavily subsidized subscription limits. Starting June 15, it will be deducted from a separate credit pool at full API rates.

Variable Credits Based on Subscription Plan

The amount of credit granted depends on the subscription level:

  • Pro users receive $20
  • Max 5x users receive $100
  • Max 20x users receive $200

For Team subscriptions, it's $20 per seat for the Standard level and $100 for the Premium level. Enterprise customers receive variable amounts depending on the type of seat. These credits reset at each billing cycle and expire if not used.

Options After Credit Exhaustion

Once the credit is exhausted, users can continue with Usage Credits, billed at API prices, which can be activated or deactivated. If these credits are deactivated, users will have to wait for the credit reset in the next billing cycle.

Implementation of the Change

For now, no action is required from users. Anthropic has announced that an email will be sent on June 8 to allow subscribers to activate their credit. The change will take effect on June 15.
