LinkedIn Sees a Decline in Hiring, but AI Is Not to Blame
At the Semafor World Economy summit, Blake Lawit, Head of Global and Legal Affairs at LinkedIn, shared crucial insights about the job market. He revealed that LinkedIn's data shows a decrease in hiring of about 20% since 2022. However, he emphasized that this decline cannot be attributed to artificial intelligence.
LinkedIn, with its vast network of over one billion members, offers a unique and real-time perspective on the global labor market. Lawit pointed out that, despite the general interest in the potential impact of AI on employment, LinkedIn's analyses have not highlighted a direct link between AI and the reduction in hiring.
The Impact of Interest Rates on the Job Market
According to Lawit, the decline in hiring is more closely related to other economic factors, particularly rising interest rates. He explained that sectors often cited as likely to be affected by AI, such as customer support, administration, or marketing, have not shown significant signs of AI impacting hiring.
Although the figures indicate a decrease in hiring, Lawit clarified that this trend is not more pronounced than during previous periods. He also mentioned that the decline in hiring does not particularly affect recent graduates seeking their first job, compared to mid- or late-career workers.
An Uncertain Future for the Job Market
Despite the current lack of direct impact from AI on hiring, Lawit does not rule out future changes. He warned of a rapid transformation in the skills required in the labor market. According to LinkedIn's forecasts, the skills needed for an average job have already changed by 25% in recent years, and this figure could reach 70% by 2030 with the rise of AI.
This evolution means that even without changing jobs, workers will need to adapt to new professional requirements. Lawit thus emphasized the importance for individuals and companies to prepare for these impending transformations.
