Amazon recently announced the official integration of Claude Code from Anthropic and Codex from OpenAI for all its employees, thereby expanding access to artificial intelligence tools beyond its internal tool, Kiro. This decision marks a significant step in Amazon's strategy to enhance technological innovation internally.
In an internal memo obtained by Business Insider, Jim Haughwout, Vice President of Software Developer Experience at Amazon, specified that Claude Code would be immediately available to all employees, while Codex would be accessible starting May 12. These tools will be deployed via Amazon Bedrock and managed by Amazon Web Services (AWS), simplifying their use without requiring additional infrastructure.
Haughwout emphasized the importance of these tools in driving innovation within the company, stating: "To help you innovate more for our customers, we are expanding the AI tools available to you."
A Strategic Shift
Until recently, using Claude Code in production required special authorization, which had led to complaints among Amazon engineers. They often preferred the internal tool Kiro, but the restrictions limited their ability to use Claude Code. The current deployment reflects a strategic shift, where Amazon now views these tools as essential rather than optional.
A spokesperson for Amazon confirmed to Business Insider that the company is standardizing access to Claude Code and Codex, thereby eliminating the need for separate approvals. "At Amazon, we have long believed that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to innovation," he added. "Our developers use Kiro for agentic coding, and now, with Claude Code and Codex running on AWS, we are also making other tools available."
Strategic Investments and Strengthened Partnerships
Amazon has recently ramped up its investments in leading AI labs, including Anthropic and OpenAI. In February, the company announced a major partnership with OpenAI, investing up to $50 billion. In return, OpenAI committed to using Amazon's Trainium chips and collaborating with AWS on custom models.
At the same time, Amazon has strengthened its ties with Anthropic, planning to invest up to an additional $25 billion, in addition to the $8 billion already promised. Anthropic, for its part, has agreed to purchase $100 billion worth of Trainium chips. These investments reflect Amazon's commitment to integrating cutting-edge technologies to support its operations and development teams.
In conclusion, the integration of Claude Code and Codex represents a major advancement for Amazon, which seeks to optimize the productivity of its developers while consolidating its strategic partnerships in the field of artificial intelligence.
