Google and Gemini: A Futuristic Vision that Concerns the Real World

At the Google I/O conference, Google unveiled its ambitious plans to integrate artificial intelligence into daily life through Gemini. This AI is designed to infiltrate various aspects of our existence, from event planning to grocery management, as well as optimizing creativity and work. The presentation, while spectacular, was perceived by some as disconnected from the realities of everyday life.

The staging of this event evoked comparisons to The Hunger Games, where the cheerful news and flashy demonstrations starkly contrast with the harsh reality for the majority. Google seemed more interested in echoing its own praises than in addressing the real users present. The demonstrations were aimed at impressing investors, ensuring that Google’s stock remains at historic highs. However, for observers on the ground, the company appeared to ignore the genuine concerns of users.

Among the innovations presented, Gemini Omni, Ask YouTube, Gemini Spark, and the new AI search were particularly highlighted. These tools promise to simplify users' lives by taking on various tasks, but they also raise questions about the growing dependence on AI. Gemini is even capable of rewriting reality and swapping people in videos, adding a layer of complexity and concern.

Google's announcements were punctuated by frequent pauses for expected applause, reinforcing the impression of a spectacle rather than genuine communication with the audience. These self-congratulatory announcements took on a sinister meaning in the real world, where jobs and entire industries are threatened by what Gemini seeks to claim. The Gemini models are tasked with doing everything, which creates an increased risk of stripping YouTube content creators of their revenue. Indeed, these creators must contend with Gemini seizing and summarizing their videos.

The new generative shopping features of Gemini also have a significant impact. Shopping sites have taken a hit with these innovations, such as an agentic hub designed to manage storefront details with personalized recommendations. This raises questions about the growing dependence on AI and its economic implications.

The environmental implications of this technological expansion are not negligible. The data centers required to operate Gemini consume enormous amounts of water and energy, exacerbating tensions in a context of limited resources. The resources that these new Gemini tricks will require from water-thirsty AI data centers are already notorious for taking water and electricity from communities with little regulation, amid increasing drought and rising energy prices.

The Google I/O was perceived as the darkest ever seen. While the majority of American households struggle for basic needs like accessibility, social services, and employment, the excitement felt closer to a dystopia than ever. The tired faces in the crowd during the presentation spoke volumes about the reception of these announcements. Smile as much as you want, but having an AI – which we have seen still has many flaws – manage your life and steal your data doesn’t seem fun in the real world.

Time will tell how users will react to this new push from Gemini. In the meantime, I find myself typing this article in a Google document and chatting with colleagues using Google tools on Google email, feeling a bit like I’m living in The Hunger Games.
