OpenAI Adjusts Its Strategy for ChatGPT in Response to E-Commerce Challenges
OpenAI, the company behind the famous ChatGPT chatbot, had grand ambitions to transform its tool into an e-commerce platform. However, these plans are not unfolding as expected. In a recent announcement, OpenAI revealed that it is pausing a feature that allowed users to purchase products directly through ChatGPT.
The Failure of Instant Checkout
Last year, OpenAI introduced shopping features in ChatGPT, positioning the chatbot as a “shopping assistant.” This feature, dubbed “Instant Checkout,” launched in September, allowed users to chat with the bot to select products and add them to a virtual shopping cart, similar to a traditional e-commerce site. Although purchases were made from external vendors, ChatGPT served as a portal for these transactions.
However, Instant Checkout did not achieve the anticipated success. OpenAI explained in a blog post that this initial version did not provide the desired flexibility. Consequently, the company decided to allow merchants to use their own payment systems while focusing on improving product discovery. OpenAI clarified to TechCrunch that merchants could still integrate this feature through applications within ChatGPT.
Reorienting Towards Product Discovery
A spokesperson for OpenAI indicated that the company would deprioritize the development of Instant Checkout as a standalone feature. The focus will now shift to developing product discovery for consumers. OpenAI will continue to support various payment methods, including those through merchants' websites.
Reports from The Information and CNBC revealed that OpenAI's new plan is to allow merchants to create their own applications within ChatGPT, redirecting users to payment experiences on merchants' sites. A source told The Information that ChatGPT users were not utilizing the chatbot for making purchases, and an October study on ChatGPT's referral traffic showed that e-commerce sites were not generating significant revenue from ChatGPT users.
Towards an Information Hub for Consumers
Rather than transforming ChatGPT into a shopping portal, OpenAI is now steering the chatbot towards a centralized hub of information for consumers. The goal is for online shoppers to see ChatGPT as an intermediary research tool, helping them decide which product to buy.
This new shopping experience is powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an open standard for e-commerce developed in partnership with fintech company Stripe. This protocol utilizes data provided by participating merchants.
Enhanced Features for the Future
In the future, OpenAI plans to enrich ChatGPT with more detailed product information. This will include side-by-side image displays and the provision of comparative metrics for each item, such as prices, features, and reviews. This evolution aims to make ChatGPT a valuable tool for consumers looking to compare products before making a purchasing decision.
