A Journey into the Digital Age
The documentary Your Attention Please opens with a deeply resonant question: “Do you remember the world before mobile phones?” Premiering at the prestigious South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, this film invites reflection on the impact of smartphones and social media on our daily lives. For today’s young adults, including the author of this article, who is 27 years old, memories of a life without these technologies are hazy. The adolescence of this generation has been marked by the rise of smartphones, incessant notifications, and endless scrolling, plunging them into the attention economy without ever really emerging from it. CNET had the opportunity to exclusively view the trailer for this impactful film.
From the Personal to the Global: The Evolution of the Project
Initially, director Sara Robin envisioned a more modest project focused on individuals seeking to break free from their harmful digital habits. In an interview with CNET, she described her original project as a personal exploration of focus and self-control in a world saturated with distractions. However, as she conducted interviews with experts, technologists, and families affected by cyberbullying, the film took on unexpected dimensions. What was meant to be a reflection on personal habits transformed into a deep analysis of modern technological systems and their influence on human behavior, ranging from the rise of social media to the growing impact of AI.
The Reconfiguration of Human Values
During her research, Robin noted a recurring observation: social media has not only transformed our modes of communication but has also subtly redefined our values. Once-private experiences, such as friendship or affection, now have digital equivalents. Followers, likes, comments, views, and shares have become indicators of our personal worth. In the architecture of social platforms, these numbers function as a social currency, redefining social validation.
Trisha Prabhu, a digital safety advocate and inventor of the anti-cyberbullying technology ReThink, asserts that social media has done more than create new online spaces. It has fundamentally altered the dynamics of social validation. Popularity metrics often favor attention-seeking behaviors and amplify conflicts, making authentic connection harder to quantify and thus easier to overlook.
AI: A Catalyst for New Challenges
Prabhu warns of the acceleration of existing problems as automated systems gain sophistication. AI tools can generate abusive messages on a large scale, create convincing impersonations, or produce deepfakes that spread rapidly. In some cases, technology blurs the line between human interaction and machine-generated communication, exacerbating loneliness or encouraging harmful behaviors. “AI exacerbates existing harms, but it also creates new ones,” she told CNET. She highlights reports of AI tools encouraging users, including minors, to harm themselves and raises the question of the balance between time spent with AI and time spent with human beings.
A Collective Awareness
During filming, Robin was struck by the universality of attention-related anxieties. Conversations with families, educators, and advocates from around the world revealed common themes: overstimulated attention, declining focus in classrooms, increasing anxiety among youth, and a persistent fear related to constant connectivity.
These concerns have led to a moment of mobilization around the film's release. On March 11, more than 25 organizations focused on digital well-being will simultaneously release the trailer for Your Attention Please as part of the Stand for Their Attention initiative. What began as a small collaboration among five groups quickly expanded as news spread. The coalition includes organizations such as Common Sense Media, Protect Young Eyes, Mothers Against Media Addiction, Center for Humane Technology, Smartphone Free Childhood, and Scrolling to Death.
A Call to Action
The goal of the synchronized launch is to leverage the attention surrounding the documentary to highlight the growing movement aimed at redefining digital culture. Robin emphasizes that while many feel overwhelmed by the scale of the problem, an expanded ecosystem of advocates is working behind the scenes to build healthier digital environments, ranging from redesigning products to changing norms around screen use.
The campaign arrives at a time when the attention economy is under increasing scrutiny. Legislators in the United States and elsewhere are debating the impact of social platforms on youth mental health and childhood development. Boycotts against the use of AI are multiplying. Researchers are studying the influence of algorithms and chatbots on behavior, while individuals seek to determine the role of technology in their daily lives.
Redefining Our Relationship with Technology
Despite the seriousness of these discussions, Robin insists that the film does not aim to leave the audience feeling powerless. She expresses more optimism than during the early days of social media, due to the growing awareness surrounding AI. The systems that shape our digital lives are built by humans, which means they can be changed.
“We have more power than we think,” Robin asserts. “There are many ways to get involved, whether by changing individual habits, altering the culture within your own family and community, designing technology differently, participating in these conversations, or advocating for legislative change.”
The film deliberately avoids proposing a one-size-fits-all solution. Instead, Your Attention Please poses a broader question: what happens when attention, one of the most human aspects of our lives, becomes one of the most valuable commodities in the global economy? And most importantly, what kind of digital world do we want to build for the future?
