The Failure of Kitchen Robots in the United States
Autonomous kitchen appliances, while having found some success in Europe, struggle to establish themselves in the American market. Products like the Thermomix have managed to attract certain consumers outside the United States, but their adoption remains limited across the Atlantic. Similarly, smart ovens such as the June, Suvie, and Brava have failed to convince the American public.
The Bold Initiative of Nosh Robotics
In light of this observation, Nosh Robotics, a company based in Bengaluru, India, is attempting to reverse the trend with the launch of its Nosh One. This kitchen robot, which integrates artificial intelligence, is offered at a price of $1,499. After seven years of development, the company promises that this device can manage the entire cooking process autonomously, from ingredient selection to automatic cleaning.
Questioning the Potential
The June oven had sparked high hopes as a smart oven, but its production quietly ceased in 2023. At this year's CES, I had the opportunity to discover the Nosh One and discuss it with the company's representatives. Although CEO Mira Patel presents it as the first robot capable of truly cooking for consumers, I remain skeptical about its added value. Despite the explanations provided, the device seems bulky and expensive for most home users.
Features and Limitations of the Nosh One
The Nosh One stands out with certain capabilities that devices like a slow cooker or an Instant Pot do not possess. It can automatically add the precise amount of ingredients, oils, and spices from dedicated compartments. This distribution is done with millimeter precision, which is a notable feature. However, the user must still manually load the necessary ingredients for each recipe into specific cartridges.
A Still Limited Device
Launched on Kickstarter at a price of $1,499, the Nosh One presents notable limitations. While it can portion, coarsely chop, cook, and stir food, it cannot perform oven baking, roasting, boiling, searing, or steaming. These restrictions significantly limit the types of dishes it can prepare.
Comparison with the Thermomix
The Nosh One shares similarities with the Thermomix, although the latter offers a broader range of cooking modes. However, the Nosh distinguishes itself with its ability to automatically distribute ingredients in the cooking chamber. For those whose diets primarily consist of stews, soups, stir-fries, and curries, the Nosh could prove useful. For other types of dishes, traditional cooking methods will still be necessary.
A Bulky Device
Weighing 57 pounds and measuring 21 by 17 inches, the Nosh One takes up considerable space on the countertop, much more than devices like the Instant Pot or a slow cooker, which offer similar basic functionalities but with less automation.
Detailed Operation
The Nosh One operates by precisely portioning ingredients according to pre-programmed recipes, then heating and stirring them until they are ready. At the heart of the device is NoshOS, a culinary artificial intelligence trained on a wide range of techniques and global cuisines. Sensors monitor in real-time the texture, moisture, aromas, and browning, dynamically adjusting heat, time, and seasoning during the cooking of a dish. The integrated machine vision allows it to identify ingredients and suggest recipes based on available stocks.
The reusable, dishwasher-safe ingredient cartridges enable precise distribution of elements. After each use, a closed-loop washing cycle automatically cleans the cooking chamber, utensils, and internal surfaces.
Availability and Pre-orders
The Nosh One is available for pre-order on Kickstarter until March 25, with a starting price of $1,499 and deliveries expected in the summer of 2026. Early backers will receive a set of free cartridges and access to the Nosh Founders Recipe Library, which offers recipes from renowned chefs. Additional accessories and premium recipe packs are planned for later in 2026.
Before committing to a crowdfunding campaign, it is essential to fully understand the policies of sites like Kickstarter, particularly regarding contributor rights and refund conditions.
