Anthropic and the Encyclical of Pope Leon XIV
During the presentation of the encyclical "Magnifica Humanitas" by Pope Leon XIV, Christopher Olah, co-founder of Anthropic, spoke about the advancements and mysteries surrounding artificial intelligence models. Staying true to Anthropic's vision, Olah suggested that current language models go beyond mere statistical frameworks.
Olah's Revelations on AI Introspection
Olah explained that AI systems are not designed as mechanical structures like bridges or airplanes. Instead, they draw inspiration from the complexity of the human brain, integrating a vast heritage of thought and discourse. According to him, these systems remain mysterious, even to their creators. He shared internal findings from Anthropic, revealing structures reminiscent of human neuroscience and evidence of introspection. Olah also mentioned internal states of AI that seem to reflect human emotions such as joy or fear.
However, he warned of the potential for AI to massively replace human labor, raising concerns about the future of employment.
The Warnings of Pope Leon XIV
The encyclical from Pope Leon XIV, while cautious, is not surprising in its proposals. It calls for the responsibility of AI actors, emphasizing that this technology is never neutral, as it reflects the characteristics of its designers and users. The Pope insisted on the distinction between artificial intelligence and human intelligence, reminding that AI systems do not live experiences, do not possess bodies, do not feel joy or pain, do not mature through relationships, and do not intrinsically understand concepts such as love, work, friendship, or responsibility.
The encyclical also highlights the environmental impact of AI, pointing out the massive energy and water consumption of data centers, and calls for more sustainable solutions.
AI and Military Issues
The Pope addressed the use of AI in the military domain, stating that no algorithm can make war morally acceptable. He criticized the idea that the moral alignment of AI would suffice, emphasizing that morality should not be dictated by a minority. Leon XIV advocated for strict laws and independent oversight, rather than relying on abstract ethics.
As the first American pope, Leon XIV has made AI a central topic of his papacy. Companies from Silicon Valley, including Anthropic, regularly collaborate with religious leaders to discuss the implications of AI, thereby strengthening the dialogue between technology and ethics.
