Google Expands Access to Gemini in the United States
Google recently announced that its personalized artificial intelligence tool, Gemini, is now accessible to all users in the United States. This feature, previously reserved for subscribers of the Google AI Pro and AI Ultra plans, is now available to users of the free version. However, it remains limited to personal Google accounts, excluding business, enterprise, or educational accounts.
Personalization through Google Apps
Gemini's Personal Intelligence feature allows for the connection of various Google applications, such as YouTube, Google Photos, and Gmail, to provide enriched context for the responses and suggestions offered by the AI. With this integration, Gemini can, for example, recommend purchases based on recently acquired items or provide technical advice tailored to the devices the user already owns. Allison Johnson, who tested this feature, noted that while Gemini can analyze her interests, the AI can sometimes lack precision in details.
User Control and Privacy
It is important to note that the use of Personal Intelligence is optional. Users can choose not to activate this personalization or disconnect applications from Gemini at any time. Google emphasized that neither Gemini nor the AI mode directly trains on personal data contained in Gmail or Google Photos. Training is conducted only on limited information, such as specific queries in Gemini or the AI mode, as well as on the responses generated by the model.
