Meta Unveils Its AI Agent for Professionals
Meta recently introduced the Meta Business Agent, an artificial intelligence agent designed for professionals using WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger. This initiative aims to close the gap the company has in the AI agent space and diversify its revenue sources, which have traditionally been dominated by advertising.
In a rapidly growing AI agent market, where giants like Amazon, Anthropic, and open-source platforms like OpenClaw are vying for supremacy, Meta has fallen behind, particularly due to the failed launch of Llama 3 last year. During the Conversations event in London on June 3, Mark Zuckerberg expressed his desire to reposition Meta in this technological race.
Advanced Features of the AI Agent
The Meta Business Agent installs quickly and offers personalized responses to customers in their language while maintaining the brand's tone. Its capabilities include:
- Answering specific business inquiries
- Recommending products from a catalog
- Scheduling appointments
- Qualifying leads
- Closing sales
Executives can intervene at any time during a conversation. The agent also provides a daily report of missed interactions, complete with detailed analytics, which is particularly useful for small businesses with limited resources. A waiting list is open for free access to advanced features such as:
- Market research
- Product feedback collection
- Integration with scheduling management tools
- Competitive monitoring
A transition to paid subscriptions via Meta One is planned in the coming months.
A Platform Dedicated to Large Enterprises
For large enterprises, Meta has launched the Meta Business Agent Platform, an infrastructure that allows for the creation, customization, and deployment of AI agents at scale. This platform offers connections to hundreds of third-party services, such as Shopify or Zendesk, and will be billed based on usage. Meta is betting on its ability to integrate AI to expand its influence.
Towards Increased Automation of Interactions
Meta, which still derives nearly 98% of its profits from advertising, is looking to diversify its revenue. AI agents could represent one of the company's most promising initiatives. “A clothing store in Birmingham or a bakery in São Paulo can now offer the same personalized and always-available experience as a major brand,” Zuckerberg promises.
Interactions with merchants on WhatsApp, Instagram, or Messenger are expected to become increasingly automated, whether it’s asking a question, placing an order, or scheduling an appointment. “As our models progress, your agent will take on more tasks and eventually help you manage your entire business,” the executive believes. This is an ambitious bet for Meta, whose role as an intermediary between businesses and customers has become essential. Only time will tell if this strategy will pay off.
