Martin Scorsese, one of the most iconic filmmakers in cinema, has recently entered into a partnership with Black Forest Labs, a startup specializing in AI-generated imagery. This partnership, reported by the New York Times, marks a new step in the use of AI in Hollywood, although its application is currently limited to storyboarding.
Scorsese, who has been creating his own storyboards for 70 years, sees this technology as a way to accelerate and clarify the communication of his artistic vision to cinematographers and production designers. This initiative is part of a broader trend where Hollywood is beginning to adopt AI tools, which were once met with skepticism.
Black Forest Labs, although based in Freiburg, Germany, provides image capabilities to giants like Adobe, Canva, Microsoft, and Meta. It was recently valued at $3.25 billion, backed by investors such as BroadLight Capital, co-founded by Rick Yorn, Scorsese's manager.
Founded by the team behind Stable Diffusion, Black Forest Labs recently declined a collaboration with Elon Musk's xAI. This decision follows the end of a previous partnership concerning the Grok image generator, due to concerns over content safety measures.
Scorsese's initiative may raise concerns among some players in the entertainment industry, but it also illustrates a shift in attitude in Hollywood, where AI is starting to be seen as a potential ally rather than a threat.
