Meta Persists in Its Massive Investments in AI
Meta recently reaffirmed its commitment to artificial intelligence during the presentation of its second-quarter financial results. Despite investor expectations, the company clearly indicated that spending on AI would continue until profits improve. However, this announcement was not well received by the market.
Meta's financial results highlighted the importance of AI in the growth of its advertising business, which increased by 27%. This rise is attributed to a 14% increase in ad impressions and a 12% increase in the average price per ad.
Colossal Spending and Mixed Results
Despite these promising figures, Meta continues to invest heavily in AI, with expenditures reaching $31.1 billion, nearly double that of the previous year. These significant investments have considerably reduced the company's free cash flow, which fell from $8.55 billion to just $784 million. One analyst described this strategy as "throwing spaghetti against the wall," emphasizing the uncertainty of the results.
Investors reacted negatively to this news, leading to a nearly 10% drop in Meta's stock price following the announcement of the results.
Microsoft: A More Measured AI Strategy
Meanwhile, Microsoft also released its financial results, highlighting the successes of its Azure and Microsoft 365 Copilot products. Microsoft's Chief Financial Officer, Amy Hood, emphasized these successes in an internal memo, indicating that budget forecasts for AI remained stable.
This more measured approach was well received by investors, with Microsoft’s stock price rising nearly 8% in after-hours trading.
The Challenge of Convincing Investors
The comparison between Meta and Microsoft illustrates a simple truth: AI spending is acceptable to investors as long as it is accompanied by direct and measurable returns. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, explained that the company's AI initiatives might take longer to bear fruit, as many immediate use cases are intended for developers.
Zuckerberg also highlighted the enormous market potential for consumer-targeted AI applications, an area where Meta, with its billions of users on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads, hopes to excel.
Concerns Surrounding AI
However, Meta must also contend with a certain level of distrust from the American public regarding AI. To alleviate these fears, the company has launched a broad public relations campaign, including an editorial by Zuckerberg and several interviews.
Peter Kafka from BI suggests that Meta could better persuade the public to embrace AI by adopting more eco-friendly approaches.
In conclusion, Meta must quickly find solutions to reassure its investors, who are beginning to lose patience in the absence of concrete results.
