Meta, under the leadership of Mark Zuckerberg, has decided to diversify its revenue sources by introducing paid subscription options for its flagship platforms: Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. This strategic shift comes as the company seeks to reduce its reliance on traditional advertising revenue and reassure investors about its heavy investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The new subscriptions, named Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus, are offered at a price of $3.99 per month. For WhatsApp, the WhatsApp Plus subscription is set at $2.99. These offerings primarily include cosmetic benefits such as detailed story statistics, custom icons, and super reactions. It's important to note that the existing verification program, Meta Verified, remains distinct from these new offerings.
In parallel, Meta is also launching paid AI services. Meta One Plus is available for $7.99, while Meta One Premium is offered at $19.99. These services follow a model similar to that of OpenAI and Google, where users pay for increased computing power, deeper model reasoning, and enhanced image and video generation capabilities.
Initial tests of these new offerings will begin next month in countries such as Singapore, Guatemala, and Bolivia. Additionally, Meta plans to launch specific plans for creators and businesses, with pricing set at $14.99 and $49.99, in markets like Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Thailand, and Bangladesh.
Finally, Meta recently unveiled its latest artificial intelligence model, Muse, after facing challenges with its previous series of models, Llama.
