Meta Superintelligence Labs recently announced the launch of Muse Spark, an artificial intelligence model that marks a significant turning point for the company. This development comes after Mark Zuckerberg made substantial investments to revitalize Meta's efforts in the AI field. Muse Spark is now integrated into the Meta AI app and the Meta AI website in the United States, with plans for expansion to other platforms such as WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and Meta's smart glasses in the coming weeks.
Muse Spark stands out for its specific design for Meta products, similar to how Google Gemini seamlessly integrates with Google products. Meta also plans to make Muse Spark accessible to select partners in a private preview via the API. The model is designed to efficiently manage multiple AI sub-agents, allowing for quick and effective processing of queries, and supports multimodal inputs, including text and images. This feature is particularly relevant for Meta's AI-powered camera glasses, which the company views as a major advancement in computing.
Muse Spark allows users to switch between a faster "Instant" mode and a "Thinking" mode intended to provide more thoughtful results, similar to options like Microsoft's "Think Deeper." Additionally, Muse Spark is capable of answering complex questions in areas such as science, mathematics, and health. This capability is crucial, as health-focused AI chatbots have sparked debates due to their handling of sensitive data and the risk of misinformation. Meta asserts that Muse Spark's multimodal perception is particularly valuable in the health domain, providing detailed responses, including for questions involving images and graphs. This positions Meta in direct competition with OpenAI's ChatGPT Health and Anthropic's Claude for Healthcare, both launched in January.
In its announcement, the company showcased its chatbot estimating the calorie count of a meal—a popular but often random use of AI technology. Meta also envisions using Muse Spark to power new features that will integrate recommendations and content shared by users on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. The company is working on larger models and plans to make future versions open-source. Muse Spark is described as an "early data point" in the trajectory of the new Muse series, representing Meta's second major advancement in AI following the Llama models. This initiative follows Zuckerberg's revision of the company's AI program after the disappointing launch of Llama 4 in 2025.
