Meta Redirects Its Engineers Towards AI, Then Backtracks
Last month, Meta made the radical decision to reassign thousands of its engineers to specialized units focused on artificial intelligence training. This massive reorganization raised concerns about employee morale, prompting the company to reconsider its stance. Now, Meta is offering its employees the option to leave these units if they wish, a decision announced by Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth.
An Internal Memo Reveals a Change in Direction
An internal memo obtained by Business Insider, along with testimonies from four individuals familiar with the situation, indicates that Meta has decided not to force its engineers to join a dedicated AI task force. Approximately 7,000 employees had been redirected to units such as the applied AI task force, responsible for training the company's future artificial intelligence models.
Employee Autonomy Highlighted
On Wednesday, a memo was sent to the affected employees, stating that Meta would now respect each individual's choice. The document emphasized the importance of personal autonomy in the opportunities offered by the company. While Meta prefers that its employees stay to work together towards state-of-the-art (SOTA) solutions, it grants everyone the freedom to choose their own path.
Opportunities for Reassignment Within the Company
The memo also mentioned that employees in the AI unit would receive preferential placement in other departments of the company due to staffing shortages. This measure aims to facilitate the transition for those who choose to leave the task force.
Mixed Reactions from Employees
Meta declined to comment on this story, but on the platform Blind, some employees referred to the memo as an "undraft," highlighting the initial discontent regarding the task force. The task force had been criticized for tasks likened to data labeling, an activity perceived as undervalued.
An Unprecedented Morale Crisis
This reversal comes after Andrew Bosworth acknowledged a significant morale crisis within the company. During an internal "Tuesdays with Boz" session on June 2, Bosworth admitted that employee morale was likely at its lowest point in Meta's 20-year history, according to Business Insider.
Context of Mass Layoffs
In May, Meta implemented a 10% reduction in its workforce, amounting to approximately 8,000 people. These mass layoffs have exacerbated internal tensions, contributing to the morale crisis that the company is now attempting to address.
