Microsoft has recently finalized an agreement to lease a data center located in Abilene, Texas. This site, initially developed for Oracle and OpenAI, boasts an impressive capacity of 700 megawatts. It is strategically positioned near the Stargate campus, a major artificial intelligence infrastructure project led by Oracle and OpenAI.
The agreement was signed with the developer Crusoe after Oracle and OpenAI decided not to continue their negotiations regarding this site. Last March, Bloomberg reported that the two companies had abandoned their expansion plans in Texas due to a deadlock in funding discussions and the evolving needs of OpenAI. Oracle had contested these claims, calling the allegations of delays at the Abilene site inaccurate.
None of the companies involved—Microsoft, Oracle, OpenAI, and Crusoe—wished to comment on this new development, according to Reuters.
This acquisition is part of a broader strategy by Microsoft to expand its computing infrastructure. Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, recently mentioned in a podcast that he anticipates an excess of computing capacity and a decrease in prices by 2027 or 2028, due to the proliferation of data centers. Nadella expressed optimism about the possibility of renting capacity at a lower cost when this situation materializes.
