Microsoft Uses AI to Enhance Product Security
Microsoft has recently taken a significant step in cybersecurity by releasing a record number of patches for its flagship products, including Windows and Office. This major advancement has been made possible through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the vulnerability detection process, allowing for the discovery of flaws that may have gone unnoticed.
The tech giant announced that it has fixed 570 vulnerabilities during its monthly update, known as "Patch Tuesday" among security experts. This impressive figure highlights the extent of the challenges faced by tech companies in terms of cybersecurity.
Critical Vulnerabilities Identified
Among the numerous flaws addressed, two have been identified as zero-days, meaning they were exploited by cybercriminals before Microsoft was even aware of them. One of these flaws pertains to Windows Server, where attackers could elevate their privileges from restricted user to system administrator. The other vulnerability was found in the SharePoint file-sharing server and was actively exploited, as reported by the U.S. cybersecurity agency CISA.
AI, a Valuable Ally for Microsoft
This wave of patches comes shortly after Microsoft announced, via a blog post, that the number of monthly security updates was on the rise. The company attributed this increase to the use of AI, which has enabled the discovery of previously undetected security bugs in its software.
Pavan Davuluri, head of Windows, stated that AI allows security teams to detect a greater number of issues, resulting in an increased volume of security updates. This proactive approach could transform the way companies manage cyber threats.
The Future of Cybersecurity with AI
As AI models evolve, they are becoming increasingly sophisticated and specialized in detecting vulnerabilities. Security researchers are relying on these technologies to identify flaws that may have been present in software code for years.
