Microsoft Maintains Its Capital Investment Forecasts

Microsoft has decided to maintain its forecasts for capital expenditures related to artificial intelligence, a decision that positively impacted its stock, causing it to rise. Unlike Google, which recently raised its spending forecasts, Microsoft is choosing to diverge from the current trend of escalating investments in AI.

Indeed, last Wednesday, Microsoft confirmed that it would not alter its capital expenditure forecasts, becoming one of the first major data center players to resist the pressure to increase its investments. This announcement led to an 8% increase in its stock value. Earlier this year, Microsoft had announced an intention to spend $190 billion on investments for the current year.

During the financial results presentation on Wednesday, Microsoft reiterated this forecast, although, due to an accounting adjustment, the figure is now $175 billion. However, this does not signify a reduction in AI investments, but rather a continuation of their planning for this year.

A Cautious Approach Amid Spending Frenzy

Microsoft's decision not to increase its capital expenditures is notable in a context where most major cloud companies are raising their AI investment forecasts. These companies are engaged in a race to capture a significant market share in this rapidly expanding sector.

However, this investment frenzy is raising concerns among investors regarding the returns on these massive expenditures. Some Wall Street analysts are questioning whether tech giants might scale back their ambitions during this earnings season.

Alphabet, for example, recently increased its capital expenditure forecasts by $15 billion. Tesla also adjusted its forecasts upward. These announcements led to a drop in the stock prices of these companies, with investors reacting negatively to these increased spending plans.

Other Tech Giants Taking a Different Path

On Wednesday, Meta adjusted its capital expenditure forecast range, raising the midpoint by $2.5 billion for the year. Even before these revisions, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta had already planned to spend over $700 billion this year, primarily on AI-focused data center infrastructure.

This spending spree has resulted in a rise in memory chip prices this year. Memory constitutes a significant portion of data center costs, making the development of AI capabilities more expensive.

Consequently, the increase in AI spending forecasts has been partly driven by rising memory costs rather than new capacity development projects.

Previous studies have shown that rising memory prices could account for approximately 45% of the growth in capital expenditures among major cloud companies this year.

Thus, by maintaining its capital expenditure forecasts, Microsoft may end up slightly adjusting its capacity development plans, potentially influencing other companies to reconsider their investment strategies.
