Microsoft Teams: An Autonomous AI for Your Meetings Starting August 2026

Microsoft is set to enhance its Teams application with a new artificial intelligence feature. This innovation aims to analyze meetings in real-time to identify unanswered questions or signs of confusion among participants. Once these elements are detected, the AI will intervene in the chat to provide answers or clarifications.

The Facilitator agent, at the heart of this new feature, will be capable of monitoring a live meeting and detecting moments when a participant asks a question or appears lost. In such cases, it will be able to search for an answer on the web and post it in the meeting chat. Microsoft's stated goal is to make exchanges smoother, but this approach raises important questions regarding the confidentiality of data exchanged during meetings.

A Proactive AI in Meetings

Facilitator will no longer just take notes or respond to direct requests from participants. Microsoft wants this agent to autonomously identify misunderstandings and moments of hesitation during a Teams meeting. For example, if a technical term blocks the discussion or if a question remains unanswered, the AI will be able to seek an explanation online and post it in the chat, without waiting for a participant to explicitly ask for it.

It is important to note that the AI will not intervene verbally during the meeting, nor will it interrupt like a human participant would. However, it will need to analyze the live exchanges to determine the right moment to intervene. Microsoft assures that the responses provided by the AI will be strictly limited to the subject of the meeting, based on the agenda and the context of the discussion.

A Feature Under Control

This new capability could raise concerns among businesses. Indeed, for it to function, the AI must process conversations in real-time, which goes beyond simply generating summaries after the meeting. It must be able to detect misunderstandings, hesitations, or unanswered questions live.

Microsoft has taken steps to regulate this feature. It will not be activated by default. A participant will need to specifically add it to the meeting, and this will require a Microsoft 365 Copilot Premium license. Administrators will also have the option to block this feature at the organizational level. Additionally, it will not function if Copilot's web search is disabled.

This feature will be reserved for standard Teams meetings and will not apply to calls, webinars, or virtual assemblies. However, it can be used in meetings involving external participants, which will require explicit notification to them. The rollout of this feature is expected to begin with targeted access in early August 2026, with general availability anticipated by the end of the same month.
