At the Build 2026 conference, Microsoft unveiled a new dimension for GitHub Copilot with the launch of a desktop application. Currently available in preview, this innovation aims to extend Copilot's capabilities beyond AI-assisted autocompletion, allowing users to manage multiple development sessions simultaneously.
Until now, GitHub Copilot was primarily integrated into development environments such as GitHub, Visual Studio Code, or other compatible IDEs. With this new native application, Microsoft aims to transform Copilot into a centralized management tool for the complete software development lifecycle.
Advanced Management of Development Sessions
The desktop application allows users to launch multiple agentic sessions in parallel, starting from an idea, an issue, or a pull request. Copilot can thus open different workstreams, track their progress, and guide them through validation, review, continuous integration, and merging.
Each session is isolated in distinct Git workspaces, called git worktrees. These workspaces have their own branches, files, conversations, and task states, ensuring that work does not get mixed up. Developers have the option to pause a session, resume it later, compare the different open workstreams, and retain relevant changes before integrating them into the main project.
By offering these features, GitHub Copilot positions itself as a key player in software development, not only as an integrated assistant within the editor but also as a coordination space for parallel coding tasks.
