Midjourney Ventures into the Medical Field with an Innovative Body Scanner
Midjourney, a company renowned for its advancements in artificial intelligence and image generation, is making a notable entry into the healthcare sector. The company recently unveiled an ambitious project: an underwater body scanner. This development raises questions among medical experts about the actual utility of the scans produced and how consumers might use them.
In a blog post published on Wednesday, Midjourney announced: "Today, we are going to reveal something a little strange and a little crazy, but also spectacular and full of hope." This project, dubbed "Midjourney Medical," is based on an ultrasound scanner that the company hopes will make internal body imaging quick, common, and more accessible to the general public.
A Fast and Innovative Scanning Process
According to Midjourney, the scanner will immerse users in a water bath using a "lift." A ring of sensors will then send ultrasound waves through the body from different angles. The company compares this process to the echolocation used by dolphins.
Prototypes of this system have, according to Midjourney, successfully produced 3D maps of the body in just 60 seconds. The stated goal is to provide users with data to "become more aware of our health" and "improve our lifestyles." Midjourney describes this system as "as powerful as an MRI, and as relaxed as a spa visit."
A Spa to Enhance the Experience
Since users will already be wet after the scan, Midjourney plans to open a spa adjacent to its San Francisco site. This spa will include hot tubs, saunas, and cold plunge pools, with an opening scheduled for 2027.
Midjourney has not yet specified whether this health project will alter its primary business model, which is focused on image generation.
Concerns from Medical Experts
In discussions with Business Insider, radiologists expressed concerns about the possibility that frequent body scans could lead to incidental findings, false positives, anxiety, and unnecessary follow-up care if the results are not interpreted in an appropriate clinical context. For example, the US Preventive Services Task Force recommends preventive scan services only when evidence shows a high or moderate net benefit. In other words, discovering more things in the body is not always beneficial.
Mixed Reactions from Silicon Valley
Elon Musk called the initiative "cool" in a post on X. Ben Parr, COO of Moltbook, tested the technology and was able to see inside his arm. Hank Green, a YouTuber and science communicator, expressed reservations about how Midjourney has promoted the product. In a post on X, he emphasized that while ultrasound is promising, it does not replace MRI, CT, colonoscopy, or other types of scans.
He wrote: "If you leave this post with anything in mind, let it be this... different scans do different things. We still have all the ones we have because they fill gaps that other scans do not. Adding another full-body scan does not replace any of the others, but I really hope it adds to them."
Upcoming Challenges for Midjourney
Midjourney is moving at "the fastest physically possible speed" with this project but acknowledges potential obstacles. The first challenge is the scale of production. The company hopes to install 50,000 scanners worldwide by 2031.
The second challenge concerns regulatory approval. Midjourney indicated that it would start with "detailed body composition maps" and plans to submit test results to the FDA for expanded capabilities.
Midjourney has not yet responded to Business Insider's questions regarding billing, health data storage, or the use of AI in this technology.
