Mistral AI Acquires Emmi AI to Strengthen Industrial AI

After integrating the French startup Koyeb earlier this year, Mistral AI continues its expansion with the acquisition of the Austrian startup Emmi AI. This operation marks the company's second acquisition of the year, and represents a new exit for the investment fund Serena.

A Quick and Symbolic Exit

Guillaume Decugis, Partner at Serena, expressed his satisfaction by stating, “We are happy investors!” The French fund achieved a quick and atypical exit with Mistral AI's purchase of Emmi AI. While the financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed, the symbolic impact is significant, positioning a French player as a consolidator of the European artificial intelligence ecosystem.

As part of this acquisition, the three founders of Emmi AI, along with a team of around thirty researchers and engineers, will join Mistral AI. Johannes Brandstetter, co-founder of the Austrian startup, will lead the AI division focused on science within the French decacorn. He will be responsible for steering the company's AI activities in industrial engineering and fundamental research. Additionally, Linz, the city where Emmi AI is headquartered, will become a new office for Mistral AI, adding to its locations in Paris, London, Amsterdam, Munich, San Francisco, and Singapore.

Innovative Technology

Founded in 2024 by Johannes Brandstetter, Dennis Just, and Miks Mikelsons, Emmi AI develops Large Engineering Models to create digital twins that enable industrial simulations compliant with the laws of physics, such as fluid dynamics, multi-physical systems, and solid mechanics. The goal is to optimize design, manufacturing, and production processes. The company's name pays tribute to Emmy Noether, a mathematician whose work has been foundational for modern physics.

Emmi AI has attracted companies such as Stellantis, Veolia, and Helsing. To finance its development, the Austrian startup raised €15 million in seed funding in April 2025, with Serena leading the round alongside Speedinvest, 3VC, and PUSH VC. “We invested 13 months ago; it’s quite exceptional as a trajectory,” rejoices Guillaume Decugis. “The speed of the operation is unusual in venture capital. This is an extremely rapid and significant outcome for our fund Serena Data Ventures,” he adds.

A Strategic Acquisition for Mistral AI

For Mistral AI, this acquisition serves as a lever to strengthen its AI architecture and better meet the needs of industrial companies. “This strategic acquisition consolidates Mistral AI's leadership in industrial AI and positions us as the partner of choice for manufacturers in high-stakes sectors such as aerospace, automotive, or semiconductors,” estimates Arthur Mensch. “Strategically, this is a major move for Mistral: beyond foundational horizontal models, towards a vertical industrial AI,” adds Guillaume Decugis.

Emmi AI is Mistral AI's second acquisition. In February, the company made its first purchase by acquiring Koyeb, which develops a serverless cloud provider, allowing developers to deploy AI applications without managing infrastructure. This represents a step towards creating a dedicated AI cloud.

A Key Player in the European Ecosystem

As the race for AI intensifies globally, with significant leads from American and Chinese players, Mistral AI's positioning as a catalyst for the European ecosystem is good news. The French decacorn, which received €1.3 billion from Dutch giant ASML last year, is no longer just a highly valued startup (€11.7 billion).

It is becoming not only a buyer, offering exit opportunities for other entrepreneurs and investors, but also a player capable of consolidating its ecosystem, integrating technological components, and absorbing talent. “Emmi AI is the type of startup we used to see mainly in San Francisco. And little by little, it’s starting to arrive in Europe. This type of trajectory is still very rare in the ecosystem, but a virtuous circle is beginning to take shape with players like Mistral AI,” observes Guillaume Decugis. It remains to be seen if Serena will soon make it three with other AI companies from its portfolio being acquired by Mistral AI.
