Mistral AI Secures Colossal Funding for Its Data Center in France
Mistral AI, the French gem of artificial intelligence, has just reached a crucial milestone in its development. The company has successfully secured nearly one billion euros to build its own data center. This impressive sum ends its reliance on American infrastructures and marks a significant strategic turning point.
The startup, founded in April 2023, has secured a debt financing of $830 million. This amount was raised from a consortium of seven banks, marking a first for Mistral AI. This financial operation reflects investors' confidence in the company's potential.
Major Financial Partners
The financing was orchestrated with the support of seven renowned banking institutions, including BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole CIB, HSBC, and MUFG. The funds will be used to acquire 13,800 Nvidia chips, which will equip Mistral AI's future data center in Bruyères-le-Châtel, south of Paris. The infrastructure is expected to be operational by the second quarter of 2026.
For Mistral AI, this is the first debt financing operation since its inception. In parallel, the company has already raised over $3 billion in equity, including a $2 billion round in September 2025, valuing the company at approximately $13.8 billion.
Towards Independence from American Clouds
Until now, Mistral AI relied on American cloud providers such as Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and CoreWeave to run its models and offer GPU services to its clients. By deciding to build and own its own infrastructure, Mistral AI is changing the paradigm. This choice, although capital-intensive, allows the company to directly control its computing capacity.
This decision comes in a context where European companies and administrations are seeking to avoid routing their artificial intelligence services through American infrastructures, due to current geopolitical tensions. By developing its own facilities, Mistral AI addresses this growing concern for digital sovereignty in Europe.
An Ambitious Infrastructure Vision
The data center project in Bruyères-le-Châtel is part of a broader strategy. In March 2026, Mistral AI announced, alongside MGX, the $100 billion Abu Dhabi investment fund for AI, Bpifrance, and Nvidia, a project for an AI campus with a capacity of 1.4 gigawatts near Paris. Construction of this campus is expected to begin in the second half of 2026, with commissioning planned for 2028. This project is significantly larger than the debt-financed installation announced today.
In February 2026, Mistral AI also acquired Koyeb, a Parisian startup specializing in cloud infrastructure, as part of its strategy to expand its infrastructure. This acquisition aligns with Mistral AI's goal of strengthening its technological infrastructure capabilities.
