Moonshot AI Aims for Excellence with Kimi K4
The Chinese startup Moonshot AI is preparing to launch an even more advanced artificial intelligence model, the Kimi K4. To achieve this ambitious goal, the company is looking to acquire as many next-generation NVIDIA GPUs as possible. These components are crucial for developing high-performing AI models.
At the beginning of 2025, it was DeepSeek that caught attention in Silicon Valley. Today, it is Moonshot AI's turn to raise concerns. With its Kimi K3 model, the startup has already reached a performance level close to that of the best American models. Now, it aims to go further by accumulating more advanced GPUs.
The Quest for NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs
Moonshot AI has set its sights on NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs, known for their exceptional computing power. The goal is to make Kimi K4 an even more powerful model than Kimi K3, which already boasts 2.8 trillion parameters. According to information from The Information, Zhilin Yang, the president of Moonshot AI, is determined to gather as many of these GPUs as possible to enhance his company's computing capacity.
Tensions with Washington
This ambition of Moonshot AI comes in a tense context. Michael Kratsios, a former official from the Trump administration, recently accused the startup of using Anthropic's Fable model to develop Kimi K3. He claims that Moonshot AI had access to NVIDIA GB300 superchips not only in China but also in Thailand.
These allegations do not make the situation easier for Moonshot AI, especially at a time when the United States is debating whether to restrict open-source AI models, often associated with Chinese technologies. Moonshot AI's desire to acquire NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs could very well be perceived by Washington as a new provocation, prompting a tightening of restrictions on Chinese technology.
