Spotify is doubling down on its efforts to address the influx of AI-generated tracks. Its latest initiative involves introducing badges to recognize human artists. With this move, Spotify strengthens its fight against music produced by AI.
With nearly 300 million paying subscribers, Spotify continues to evolve. The streaming service, which recently ventured into selling physical books, has also introduced an option allowing users to disable videos. By committing to the fight against AI-generated content, Spotify has enhanced artist protection by offering a new track validation tool. This initiative aims to highlight the work of musicians.
Spotify Launches the "Verified by Spotify" Badge
AI tools capable of producing music at a lower cost are multiplying, and streaming platforms are being flooded with low-quality, artificially generated tracks. This creates unfair competition for real artists, who see their visibility and revenue affected. To combat this injustice, Spotify has announced the launch of a new green badge, "Verified by Spotify." The goal is to help users more easily distinguish authentic artists from those generated by artificial intelligence.
To obtain this badge, musicians must meet several criteria. They must have an "identifiable presence on and off the platform," which includes social media accounts, merchandise, and concert dates that will be verified to prove the authenticity of the profile. Additionally, they must demonstrate "consistent user activity and engagement," as Spotify is wary of spikes in engagement that are short-lived. Finally, they must adhere to the platform's rules. Spotify indicates that human verification will complement its automated analysis.
A Verified Badge to Highlight Real Artists
To sift through the noise, Spotify has ensured that over 99% of the artists searched by users are verified. This represents hundreds of thousands of artists, mostly independent, across all genres, at various stages of their careers, and from different regions of the world. The company wants to reassure musicians who have not yet seen the green checkmark appear on their profiles: the rollout of the badge is gradual and is expected to take several weeks.
At the same time, Spotify has launched a new section within profiles to allow artists to showcase milestones in their careers, their music releases, as well as their tours. It remains to be seen whether these initiatives will bear fruit and help artists connect more closely with their audience.
