Notion Mail Shuts Down: AI Takes Over Starting September 22

Notion Mail will close on September 22. The collaborative productivity platform is discontinuing its email client to focus on its AI agents, after discovering that more than half of its users no longer check their inboxes. Received emails will remain in Gmail, but drafts, scheduled emails, and snippets must be exported before the deadline.

Notion Mail is shutting down, but the AI agents are taking over. Notion had the potential to compete with the office suites of Google and Microsoft. In February 2024, the company acquired Skiff, a secure messaging service competing with Proton Mail, which then claimed nearly two million users. Teams worked for a year on integrating this technology before launching Notion Mail in April 2025: an email client connected to Gmail, featuring AI-powered automatic labeling, customizable filtered views, and an assisted writing tool. Fourteen months later, Notion is drawing a line under this product.

This is simply explained by the fact that more than half of Notion Mail users manage their emails without ever opening their inbox, as the platform's AI agents handle it for them. Therefore, there is no longer a valid reason for Notion to keep the product, since the agents read the mail, sort spam, and even respond to emails directly through the Gmail connection, without user intervention.

Notion's AI Agents Take Control of Emails

Announced last September during the Make with Notion conference, Notion's custom agents perform tasks in the background without human intervention, triggered or scheduled just once by the user. Connected to Gmail, Slack, and Notion Calendar, they access available information in the workspace to contextualize their actions.

And these are not just observations from individual users.

• At Pigment, a financial planning software publisher, 70% of employees use the agents weekly.
• At SumUp, over 3,000 employees do the same to generate tasks from meeting notes or produce team reports, according to data provided by both companies.

The Gmail connector for Notion AI will continue to function after Notion Mail shuts down: the agents will be able to read, draft, and send emails via Gmail just as before. Email blocks inserted into Notion pages will also remain accessible.

How to Export Your Data Before Notion Mail Closes

First and foremost, the migration must take place before September 21. Notion Mail is continuously synchronized with Gmail, so the complete history of received and sent emails remains intact in the Gmail inbox. Only certain elements specific to Notion Mail will not migrate automatically.

• Drafts must be migrated to Gmail, as well as scheduled emails.
• Snippets, which are reusable response templates, can be exported for use elsewhere.
• Automatic labeling instructions can also be saved for later use with a custom agent connected to Gmail.
• Files attached to snippets must be manually downloaded from the app settings before the closure.

The export procedure is available from the Notion Mail app or from the web. Any data not exported before September 22 will be permanently deleted. Organizations subject to regulatory compliance constraints should, according to Notion, plan their migration ahead of this general deadline.
