The UN Tackles the Climate Impact of AI
Recently, the UN Secretary-General spoke out to challenge companies specializing in artificial intelligence about the environmental impact of their activities. He emphasized the need for greater transparency regarding the carbon emissions generated by data centers. These infrastructures, essential for the functioning of AI, must commit to adopting renewable energy to reduce their ecological footprint. This week, the international organization broadened the debate by publishing an independent report that examines the benefits and risks that AI poses to humanity.
This preliminary document, developed by a group of 40 experts, highlights the potential advancements that AI can bring if used responsibly. However, the report also warns of several potential dangers of this technology, such as:
- Worsening inequalities
- Spread of misinformation
- Threats to human rights
- Disruption of labor markets
- The concentration of powerful AI systems in the hands of a limited number of governments and companies.
Experts point out that AI has already demonstrated considerable potential in sectors like medicine, agriculture, and research. However, they also express concerns about possible malicious uses, such as the creation of deepfakes, effects on users' mental health, and its exploitation by cybercriminals.
The Urgency of International Regulation of AI
The report also highlights the risk that AI may exacerbate global inequalities. While AI is used worldwide, access remains predominantly concentrated in developed countries. The most powerful AI models are primarily located in the United States and China, leaving developing countries without the data, infrastructure, and expertise necessary to fully leverage this technology.
Although the independent panel is not tasked with proposing a global regulation of AI, it provides a solid scientific foundation to guide policymakers. This work is intended to feed into the UN Global Dialogue on AI governance, set to begin this July. This dialogue will offer member states a platform to discuss strategies for managing this technology on an international scale.
António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, emphasized the importance of this panel by stating: "In a world where AI is advancing at breakneck speed, this panel will provide what has been missing until now: a rigorous and independent scientific analysis."
This group of experts aims to enlighten decision-makers on the necessity of an international approach to regulate AI. Without an appropriate framework, the technology could be used to orchestrate cyberattacks, conduct disinformation campaigns, or further deepen existing inequalities.
